A blister formed after cantharidin wart treatment: what should I check before the next treatment?

Cantharidin is applied by a clinician to create a blister around and under a wart. A blister alone does not prove clearance or determine the next treatment date. Follow the treating clinician's washing, dressing and follow-up instructions, and record pain, blister size, bleeding and skin recovery.

“I developed a blister after cantharidin treatment abroad. Should I pop it or start another wart treatment now?”

A blister can be an intended effect, not a result score

AAD describes cantharidin as a clinician-applied medicine that forms a blister around and under the wart. Blistering may be expected, but size, pain, wound status and instructions vary by product and procedure. The presence or absence of a blister alone does not confirm clearance.

Check the original instructions and recovery first

Record the treatment date, medicine or mixture, instructed wash-off time, dressing plan, when blistering began, pain, bleeding, drainage and photographs. Do not pop it or layer acid, freezing or another occlusive product on top without advice. Contact the treating service if instructions are missing or the reaction concerns you.

  • Application date and treated site
  • Medicine, mixture or strength if known
  • Wash-off, dressing and follow-up instructions
  • Blister onset, size and pain
  • Bleeding, drainage, warmth and recovery photos

Bomyung's next-step assessment

Near Gangnam Station, Seok-Yong Jo, doctor of Korean medicine, draws on 24 years of wart-care experience to review the cantharidin record with the current lesion and wound recovery. Open blistered or damaged skin is assessed first. Bomyunghwan, Bomyungtang or immune pharmacopuncture is not added automatically. Outcome, duration and absence of adverse effects are not promised.

Questions before your visit

Does the blister prove the treatment worked?

It can be an intended drug reaction but does not prove clearance by itself.

Can I pop it at home?

Do not do so without the treating clinician's instructions.

Can I add cryotherapy immediately?

Do not overlap treatments before checking skin recovery and the existing plan.

Sources and limits

AAD explains cantharidin blistering, but individual wash-off, dressing and follow-up timing must come from the treating clinician.
