My hand wart cracks and bleeds when I wash: what should I do?

If a wart-like bump cracks and bleeds, do not pick or cut it further. Gently clean and dry the area, apply pressure if needed, and protect it with a clean bandage. Seek care if bleeding does not stop or redness, swelling, pus, warmth or pain increases. Bleeding alone cannot confirm a wart or treatment success.

“I wash my hands often, and the bump on my finger has cracked and started bleeding. Can I keep working?”

Avoid creating a deeper wound

AAD and NHS guidance advises against picking warts and recommends evaluation for a lesion that changes, hurts or bleeds. Clean gently under running water, avoid scrubbing, apply pressure and cover with a clean bandage. Do not add a wart remover to open skin without checking its directions and clinical advice.

Separate hand hygiene from wound monitoring

Continue necessary handwashing gently and dry the area fully. Replace a wet or dirty bandage, and do not share nail tools, files or towels. Record when cracking started, whether bleeding was spontaneous or followed friction, and whether redness, warmth, drainage or pain is increasing.

  • Date and trigger of bleeding
  • Whether firm pressure stops it
  • Change in redness, warmth, swelling, pus or pain
  • Names of removers, ointments and dressings
  • Diabetes, circulation or immune conditions and medicines

What Bomyung reviews

Near Gangnam Station, Seok-Yong Jo, doctor of Korean medicine, draws on 24 years of wart-care experience to review previous acids, freezing or laser treatment together with the current crack, bleeding and lesion pattern. Open wounds and possible infection are considered first. Bomyunghwan, Bomyungtang or immune pharmacopuncture is considered only after individual assessment; no outcome is guaranteed.

Questions before your visit

Does bleeding mean the wart is coming off?

Not necessarily. Friction, a crack, self-removal or another skin lesion can also bleed.

Can I keep using salicylic acid on the crack?

Do not continue automatically on open or severely irritated skin; check the product instructions and a clinician’s advice.

When should I seek prompt care?

Seek care if bleeding will not stop with pressure or redness, swelling, warmth, pus or pain is increasing.

Sources and limits

Official wart self-care and minor-wound guidance is applied. Bleeding alone does not establish the diagnosis, infection or treatment response.
