A new dark nail streak and wart-like growth: remove the wart first?

If a new dark vertical nail streak appears, widens or becomes irregular, or pigment reaches nearby skin, the nail lifts, splits or develops a lump underneath, seek dermatology assessment before treating it as a wart. Not every dark streak is cancer, but do not alter its original appearance with acid, freezing or cutting first.

“There is a wart-like growth beside my nail and a new dark line in the nail. Can I try wart acid or freezing first?”

A dark line alone confirms neither cancer nor a wart

AAD notes that melanoma can rarely develop under or around a nail and lists a new dark band, pigment next to the nail, lifting, splitting or a subungual bump as changes for dermatology review. This does not mean most nail changes are cancer. Periungual warts can also alter the nail, so in-person differentiation matters.

Preserve the original appearance and prepare comparable records

Record first date, band width, color and border, pigment on nearby skin, lifting or splitting, bleeding or pain, trauma, personal or family skin-cancer history and prior wart treatment. Take dated photos in the same light and angle with a ruler, but do not change the surface with acid, freezing products or clippers before assessment.

  • Date first noticed and older photos
  • Band width, color and border changes
  • Pigment on skin around the nail
  • Lifting, splitting, bleeding or pain
  • Trauma, skin-cancer history and prior wart care

Bomyung first checks whether this belongs in wart care and prioritizes other evaluation

Near Gangnam Station, Seok-Yong Jo, doctor of Korean medicine, draws on 24 years of wart-care experience to review previous treatment with the current lesion and plan individual Korean medicine care. A new pigmented nail change is directed first to dermatology assessment, dermoscopy or biopsy consideration when appropriate. If a wart is confirmed, Bomyunghwan, Bomyungtang or immune pharmacopuncture are individualized by site, nail status, number, course and health; they are not described as cancer treatment.

Questions before your visit

Is every dark nail streak melanoma?

No. Many causes are benign, but a new or changing streak needs dermatology assessment.

Can I try a little wart acid first?

Preserve an uncertain nail lesion's original appearance and arrange assessment first.

Does Bomyung perform a biopsy?

This page does not promise a test. It prioritizes the appropriate dermatology evaluation and test decision.

Sources and limits

AAD recommends dermatology review for a new or changing dark nail band and nearby changes. It does not diagnose every streak as cancer; the responsible clinician decides whether biopsy is needed.
